SAUGUS-Ms. Virginia (Nicotera) DeRosa, 81, of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Saugus Massachusetts died peacefully at her residence surrounded by her sons and close friends on December 2, 2019. Born in September 1938, in Everett, MA she is predeceased by her parents Anthony and Lucy Nicotera of Saugus, Massachusetts and her son Anthony DeRosa.
After graduating from Girl’s High School in Boston, she married Pasquale DeRosa and raised her four children Anthony, Michael, Richard and David. Virginia was an active community member in both the town of Saugus and the 6th Congressional district of Massachusetts. In 1971, Virginia ran for school committee in Saugus and went on to serve her community for over twelve years. During her tenure on the Saugus School Committee, she became a champion for Title IX, which prohibited federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex thereby establishing Girl’s Athletics programs. She was an advocate for gifted and talented programs as well as teachers.
In 1984 Virginia accepted a position with the office of Congressman Nicholas Mavroules of the 6th District of Massachusetts. In her capacity as a Congressional Aide, Virginia worked a dynamic portfolio of issues that effected communities from Saugus to Gloucester. Her efforts improved both the structural, cultural and social services environment of the entire 6th District. From 1994 until her retirement, Virginia worked for the Internal Revenue Service in various capacities in Andover, MA, Washington DC and West Palm Beach, FL. In Washington, she worked for both the IRS modernization project and the Information Technology Systems office. Upon retiring to Florida, she spent many years travelling the world with family and friends, caring for her aunt and becoming a dedicated Mahjong player.
Virginia is survived by her three children, Michael DeRosa of Scottsdale, Arizona, his wife Nancy (McGuirk) DeRosa and her two grandchildren Stephanie DeRosa of Phoenix, Arizona and Alex DeRosa of Las Vegas, Nevada, Richard DeRosa of Saugus MA and his partner Mimi Brophy and David DeRosa of Washington DC, and her son in law, Jerome Vacher.
The Celebration of her Life will be on January 4, 2020, starting with a visitation from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Church, 14 Summer St. Saugus, MA. followed by a funeral mass at 10:30. The internment will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Malden, MA.
