Saugus - Mrs. Joan H. (Marland) Spence, age 88, died at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody on Thursday, June 6th. She was the wife of the late Richard E. Spence.

Born in Lynn and a lifelong resident of Saugus, Mrs. Spence was the daughter of the late John Y. and Grace (MacKenzie) Marland. A 1948 graduate of Saugus High School, Joan was head cashier at the Continental Restaurant for 25 years as well as working as the personal secretary to the former late Superintendent of the Saugus Public School system, William Doyle. Her many hobbies included travel, arts and crafts, tailoring, knitting and ceramics, as well as participation within various organizations & clubs.

Joan is survived by her five children, Pamela Russo and her husband James of Lynnfield, Barbara “Buffy” Crosby of FL, Lauree Spence of GA, Debbie Limegrover and her husband Rick of FL, Scott Spence of Topsfield; nine grandchildren; Jared, Brandon, Jessica, Jeff, Laura, TJ, Richie, Brittnee, and Sarah and her best friend since she was four years old, Inez Taatjes. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Spence and her brother, Ronald Marland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to a charity of your choice.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., SAUGUS on Friday from 4-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery, 164 Winter St., Saugus (meet at cemetery).
