Of Saugus - Mrs. A. Bernice (Wilson) Howard-Smith, age 101, died at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Wakefield on Friday, October 25th. She was the wife of the late Leonard P. Smith and the late James V. Howard, Sr.

Born and raised in Saugus, Mrs. Howard-Smith was the daughter of the late Harry M. and Mary C. (Tobey) Wilson. A graduate of Saugus High School, Bernice had worked as a secretary for the Saugus School Department. She was a member of the Hammersmith Quilt Guild, the Saugus Senior Center, St. John’s Woman’s Guild and the Saugus Historical Society.

Mrs. Howard-Smith is survived by two children, James V. Howard of Saugus and Lee Ellen Lewalski of Melrose; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Anne S. Roy; two brothers, Harry and Irving Wilson; one sister, Marion Wilcomb.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to St. John’s Memorial Fund, c/o St. John’s Episcopal Church, 8 Prospect St., Saugus, MA 01906 or to the Saugus Senior Center, 466 Central St., Saugus, MA 01906.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 8 Prospect St., Saugus, relatives and friends invited.
